How to Word Your RSVP: Etiquette for Asking Guests to Respond

Practical wording for wedding RSVPs — how to phrase the request, set a deadline politely, and handle guest counts, plus-ones, and no-shows.

An invitation without a clear RSVP request tends to get the vaguest possible response — a "we'll try to make it" that leaves you guessing right up to the day. A few small wording choices make the difference between guests who respond promptly and guests who never quite get around to it.

Ask directly, with a deadline

"RSVP by [date]" is more effective than a bare phone number with no timeframe attached. Indian weddings often set the RSVP deadline 10–15 days before the event, giving enough buffer to finalize catering counts. Phrasing it as "Kindly confirm your presence by [date] to help us plan better" reads as a request for a favour, not a demand.

Specify how you want the response

If you're fine with a WhatsApp message, say so — "Please confirm via WhatsApp" avoids guests calling at inconvenient times. If you've set up a dedicated RSVP page or link, mention it explicitly: "RSVP online: [link]" is now common for weddings that use a shareable RSVP page instead of manually collecting responses over calls and texts.

Handling guest counts and plus-ones

If the invitation is for a specific number of guests, say so on the card itself — "This invitation is for [Name] and family" or "...and one guest" — rather than leaving it open-ended, which is the single most common cause of unexpected extra attendees at Indian weddings.

A short, complete example

Why a link beats a phone number alone

A dedicated RSVP link lets guests respond in their own time without a phone call, and gives you a running count of who's attending without manually tracking replies across WhatsApp, calls, and texts. ShadiCardMaker's free Shareable RSVP feature generates exactly this — a guest-facing link to collect responses, and a private link for you to see attendance counts — with no signup needed for either side.
