Christian Wedding Invitation Wording: Holy Matrimony Phrases, Scripture & Samples

How to word a Christian wedding invitation — church ceremony wording, choosing a Bible verse, listing both families, and keeping the reception details separate.

A Christian wedding invitation is usually built around two events: the Holy Matrimony in a church, and the reception that follows. The wording works best when it keeps those two clearly apart — the first is a religious service guests are invited to witness, the second is a celebration they are invited to join.

Open with a blessing, not a headline

Many invitations begin with a short line acknowledging God before any names appear — for example "With the blessings of Almighty God" or "In God's sacred presence". Some families prefer a verse at the top instead; if you do, keep it to one or two lines so the names and details are not pushed down the card.

Choosing a Bible verse

Popular choices are readings that are often chosen for weddings, such as the passage on love from 1 Corinthians 13 ("Love is patient, love is kind") or Ecclesiastes 4:12 ("A cord of three strands is not quickly broken"). Whichever you choose, quote it exactly and name the book, chapter, and verse underneath so guests can find it.

Who is inviting?

Traditionally the bride's parents issue the invitation, but joint wording is now common and works well when both families are hosting:

Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Fernandes and Mr. & Mrs. Anthony D'Souza request the pleasure of your company at the Holy Matrimony of their children, Maria Anne and John Paul.

Church first, reception second

List the church name, its full address, and the service time as one block, then give the reception venue, address, and start time as a second block. Guests who attend only the service should not have to decode the card to find out when they can leave, and guests heading straight to the reception should not arrive at the church by mistake.

  • Service: church name, address, and the time the Mass or service begins
  • Reception: venue, address, and the time dinner or the programme starts
  • Dress code, if the church or family has a preference
  • RSVP contact and a reply-by date

Keep the tone consistent

A formal verse followed by casual wording like "come party with us" can read as two different cards stitched together. Pick one register — formal, warm, or playful — and hold it from the opening line to the RSVP request.

ShadiCardMaker's Christian templates include a ready-made Holy Matrimony layout with a blessing line, parents' names, and a separate area for the reception, so you only need to fill in your details.
